![]() What is White Balance? Wikipedia describes it like this: The results were pretty good but not great, not what I was after. A quick chat with a photographer friend lead me to the introduction to my camera’s custom white balance controls. I knew to match my shooting conditions, If I shot under the light in my apartment I used the tungsten setting, at the office I used fluorescent and with my JTL softbox I manually set the color to 2700k to match the 2700k of the light bulb. I had an understanding of the built in white balance presets like, auto, flash, tungsten, fluorescent, sun, shade and even manual white balance. When I bought my first DSLR a Nikon D90 I was taking some pictures of some parkerized and matte black firearms and was frustrated that the colors were not as accurate as I wanted. That brings me to the main subject of this page, “White Balance”. I’m about taking pictures and not software. While editing in software is almost unavoidable I try to minimize it and keep it simple. My goal is to simply help folks take the best pictures they can right from the lens. All that is probably well beyond visitors to this site or page. Pictures of models have every inch of them filtered, stretched, shrunk while body parts are tweaked and swapped. The pictures are layered over each other with elements masked out or unmasked. These days a single finished picture can be a composite of pictures shot over many hours and days. I think even folks who understand that an image is photoshopped might not realize exactly to what degree. I’m not opposed to this as an art form but it’s very misleading and discouraging to folks just starting out in photography or who simply aren’t into editing on a computer. Today photography seems to be becoming more about photoshop, filters and editing skills than photography. Meanwhile the young man across the street enjoys gaming on my Dells. It’s one screen, the image colors aren’t bad and using one monitor removes the aggravation of the monitors not matching. These days I’m using a stock LG 34″ WQHD UltraWide Monitor. I think folks reading this page are probably not anywhere near that level and the time and money can be better spent on other photographic gear, software and training. Professional photographers also want color accurate monitors to get the most out of their photographs from software. Now it’s important to note if your photography requires an end result of accurately printed media you absolutely need a calibrated monitor and a few other steps but you should look at monitors actually meant for photography and graphic artists, brands like EIZOand they aren’t cheap or you need to buy an Apple imac pro or macbook pro and again be prepared to dig deep in your wallet. EIZO CS2730-BK-CNX ColorEdge Professional Color Graphics Monitor with Calibration Sensor 27 If the pictures looked great on my devices that’s sufficient for my needs. It was then I decided that my ipad, notebook and iphone image quality was more important than my having a color accurate desktop or notebook monitor. ![]() ![]() This got me thinking I’m spending time and money to make my pictures look great for other peoples notebooks, monitors, iphones and tablets that ARE NOT CALIBRATED. None looked bad but when put side by side they just didn’t look the same. I borrowed my work monitor and added it to the mix. Fortunately I also used one of these monitors at the day job. This had me thinking that maybe one monitor was bad. I would literally split an image between the two screens and the two halves would look drastically different. Upon calibration the calibrated monitors did not match each other. I bought two very expensive Dell Ultrasharp IPS monitors and a DataColor Spyder to calibrate them. The computer monitor color calibration turned out to be a big waste of time and money. The first path was computer monitor color calibration and the second was what’s called “ white balance” or “ color balance“. White Balance Examples Calibrated Monitors However even an untrained eye notices when blacks and whites are not accurate. It’s not as easy for others to know if a dress in a picture is the correct royal blue or vivid red. Of course the colors in between need to be natural and accurate as well. My whites need to be white and not gray or yellow, my blacks need to be black and also not gray. I wanted skin tones to look real, I wanted colorful dresses to look like they did through my eyes and more importantly my product photography needed to accurately capture the products true colors. In my case I became obsessed with color accuracy in my pictures. In the quest for taking great pictures it’s easy to read about a tool, technique, software or workflow that can become a time and money wasting obsession. ![]() This avoids the parallax error while enabling an easy panoramic stitch during post-production. By leaving the camera stationary, you capture a frame using left-shift, centre, and then right-shift. One of the best things about the shift is it allows otherwise impossible camera angles.įor example, photographing into a mirror without the camera’s reflection is possible.Īnother feature of the tilt-shift lens is creating panoramic images. This effect is outstanding for portraits. With a tilt-shift lens, you can have a focal length running through many different distances without blurring out the other parts of the scene. This only works in the distance and will depend on the aperture. Wherever you place your focus, there is a line in your image where everything is in focus. ![]() When you use a standard lens, your focal plane and depth of field fall on distance. These tend to be used when changing camera orientation from landscape to portrait. This is also true for tilt, allowing you to use it sideways instead of top to bottom. This means that instead of using the shift to get the focal area on the left or right, you can place them at the top or bottom. ![]() If you are shooting from the top down, you need to tilt your lens down.Īs the tilt and shift features are independent of each other, each can turn 90 degrees. To correct converging verticals, you need to tilt your lens up when shooting from the bottom of a structure. Tilting your lens gives your frame the impression that your camera is much higher. To tilt your lens, use the two screw knobs on the top and bottom of the lens. You can get a considerable depth of field with a wide aperture, such as f/3.5. With the shift, you have up to 12 mm of shift at your disposal. By shifting the lens right, you place the focal area on the left of the frame. Once you place the focal line on the right, everything on the left is out of focus. That area is now closest to the sensor plane. These allow you to ‘shift’ the lens in either direction.īy shifting the lens left, you place the focal line on the right. There are two adjustable screw knobs to the left and right of the tilt-shift lens. The tilt-shift lens will move, showing you the effects in play. The benefit of these lenses is that you can see the change in the lens when you tilt or shift. This will help keep your gear down to a minimum. You can also use it without the tilt-shift feature. The lens is then shifted upwards to include the top-most part of the building. For this to work, the camera needs to be level and pointed directly toward the building. This feature, for example, lets you photograph architecture without the converging verticals. This is way bigger than the EF lenses 43.2 mm standard image circle. The Canon TS-E 24 f/3.5 Tilt-Shift, for instance, projects a 67.2mm image circle. The projection of these lenses creates much larger image circles than a typical lens. The shift feature allows the lens’ optics to shift compared to the image sensor. This is also true when using a wide aperture, where areas to the left and right will fall out of focus. This way, everything from the front to the back of the frame can be in focus. The plane of focus runs vertically through the frame. By tilting a lens left or right, you change the way the two planes interact. In a normal lens, the focal plane and sensor planes are parallel. This is where the lens plane and image plane/sensor are not parallel. The tilt feature uses the Scheimpflug principle. The photographer tilts and shifts in different directions to overcome the difficulties of perspective control. The main aim of the tilt-shift lens is to reach even parallelism and a greater depth-of-field. That is why tilt-shift lenses have a complicated construction and are quite pricey. Newer lenses also rotate, allowing the lens to cover a wider area.Įven though they do not offer in-lens stabilisation and autofocus, these lenses are specialised photography equipment. A tilt-shift lens has optics inside it that can be tilted and shifted. ![]() 4X A genre of strategic video games, short for "explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate". 4K resolution An aspect ratio of digital display devices such as televisions and monitors, supporting up to 3840 × 2160 pixel (roughly 4 kilopixels wide) resolutions. 3D graphics Graphic rendering technique featuring three-dimensional objects.
